Examine the physical and chemical properties of seawater and learn how these properties affect ocean currents and marine environments. Students visualize convection currents while examining the effects of density, temperature, pressure, and salinity. They explore the effects of heat from the sun, precipitation, evaporation, freezing and thawing of sea ice and the inflow of fresh water from rivers.

  • Hands-on ocean science investigation: Students examine the physical and chemical properties of seawater and how density, temperature, salinity, and pressure drive ocean currents and marine environments.
  • Model real-world ocean processes: Activities explore convection currents and the effects of solar heating, precipitation, evaporation, freezing and thawing of sea ice, and freshwater runoff.
  • Scenario-based analysis and presentation: Learners research and evaluate environmental impacts of major climate and human-driven changes, culminating in a panel discussion; designed for 24 students working in groups of four over two 45‑minute lab periods plus research time (some equipment required, not included).
